SCIENCE 8 TOPIC 6
2
What is insolation?
3
Insolation is… Incoming solar radiation… the portion of the sun’s radiation that reaches the earth
4
What is intensity of radiation?
5
What is intensity of radiation?
The rate that energy is given off by an object such as the sun
6
What is intensity of insolation?
7
What is intensity of insolation?
The rate that energy given off by an object (such as the sun) reaches a given area (such as the earth’s surface) and is absorbed
8
So what did we just say??? Insolation is…Incoming solar radiation which is the portion of the sun’s radiation that reaches the earth Intensity of radiation is the rate that energy is given off by an object such as the sun Intensity of insolation is the rate that energy given off by an object (such as the sun) reaches a given area (such as the earth’s surface) and is absorbed
9
How does the angle of insolation effects the intensity of energy reaching any area?
10
Insolation is greater as the angle of insolation approaches 90 degrees
11
Insolation is greater as the angle of insolation approaches 90 degrees

The differences between the heating and cooling rates of soil and water
13
Soil surfaces heat up and cool down faster than water surfaces because they are generally rougher, darker, and are not transparent so just the surface heats up. This means they have a lower specific heat than water.
14
1. Explain in detail the results of our lab that dealt with the angle of insolation. 2. Explain in detail the results of our lab that dealt with the heating and cooling rates of water and soil.

The Greenhouse Effect
19
The Greenhouse Effect takes place when short-length, high energy waves enter the earth’s atmosphere. The waves of energy strike the earth’s surface and give off some of their energy. Now there are longer-length, less energetic waves inside the Earth’s atmosphere. These longer-length, less energetic waves cannot make it back out of the earth’s atmosphere causing it to warm up.
21
How does the duration of insolation effect the intensity of energy reaching any given area?
22
Make it look like this
24
The time of year when there is the greatest insolation from the sun does not match the point of greatest temperature on the earth. During the spring, as the insolation increases, the earth’s temperature will also increase until June 21st when the northern hemisphere receives its greatest insolation. From that day onward the amount of insolation is decreasing yet, surprisingly, the temperature of the earth keeps rising. The earth’s temperature keeps rising for about a month or so. This occurs because even though the insolation is dropping there is still a greater amount of energy entering the earth’s atmosphere than the energy held onto by the earth. Therefore, the earth continues to gain temperature until a radiative balance occurs: equal energy entering and leaving.
25
The time of year when there is the least insolation from the sun does not match the point of least temperature on the earth. During the fall, as the insolation decreases, the earth’s temperature will also decrease until December 21st when the northern hemisphere receives its least insolation. From that day onward the amount of insolation is increasing yet, surprisingly, the temperature of the earth keeps falling. The earth’s temperature keeps falling for about a month or so. This occurs because even though the insolation is increasing there is still a lower amount of energy entering the earth’s atmosphere than the energy held onto by the earth. Therefore, the earth continues to lose temperature until a radiative balance occurs: equal energy entering and leaving.
