The Depression’s Effect on People
The Depression brought hardship, homelessness, and hunger to millions In cities People lost their jobs & homes (or had $ & hours cut) “Shantytowns” sprang up Soup kitchens & bread lines Offered free or low cost food Minorities were targets of racism (competition for jobs) Blacks were lynched, Mexicans were deported In rural areas Many farmers lost land Farmers could grow their own food

The Dust Bowl Most of the plains became un-farmable because of:
Over farming Overgrazing Severe Drought Many farmers left the plains and came to CA via Route 66 Okies- a derogatory term for all migrants Population of CA up one million people in 1930s.

Effects on the Family An emphasis on family unity w/ tough times
Board games & radio were cheap entertainment Depression caused some families to break up Men in the Streets Men had difficulty coping w/unemployment Used to working and providing for family Walked the streets for jobs daily Discouraged, some men abandoned their families Many men became hobos Riding the rails and sleeping under bridges No system of direct relief from the government

Women in the Depression
Worked to help family survive Canned food and/or sewed clothes Women who worked outside the home criticized for having a job when men did not Women were thought to be having an easier time since they were not begging or standing in bread lines Women were ashamed & often starved to death

Children in the Depression
Nutrition Malnutrition and diet-related diseases rose Education Schools closed or the year was shortened Adventure Many teens hopped trains and made their way across the country (“Wild Boys & Hoover Tourists”) Dangerous; many were killed or injured

Social & Psychological Effects
Suicide rate rose more than 30% ( ) 3X the number of people were admitted to mental hospitals Not bad since you got 3 meals a day & shelter People stopped going to doctor$ & dentist$ Achieving financial security became the focus of life People who could afford to generally helped people out who were in need.
