5 What is psychology? Defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Behavior : refers to observable, measurable actions i.e physical movements or biological responses (heart rate, brain activity or blood pressure) Mental processes (cognitive activities): refers to activities such as thoughts, memories, dreams or perceptions

6 Psychology also involves a study of emotions and feelings
Psychological constructs: theories used to study things that can’t be directly observed or measured

7 Theory v. Principle Theory Principle
Attempts to explain why things are they way they are Ex. People who don’t get enough sleep are grouchy. Rule or law that governs behavior or mental processes Ex. Students who study will get good grades.

8 Goals of psychology observe describe explain predict control

9 Who are psychologists and what do they do?
Use the textbook (pages 8-11) to identify at least 3 occupations of psychologists and place them in the graphic organizer. Then pair with classmate to add at least 2 more occupations to your list.
