The rhetorical triangle
Pathos (Appealing to emotion) Logos (Appealing to logic) Ethos (Appealing to one’s own character)

repetition Simple repeating of a word/phrase for effect or emphasis

restatement Expressing the same idea in different words to clarify and stress key points

Rhetorical question A question, not answered, because it is obvious
Used for emphasis and effect

Parallelism Sentence structure similarity
Several parts of a sentence/several sentences are expressed similarly Adds balance & rhythm

antithesis is a kind of parallelism in which two opposite ideas are put together in parallel structures. A clear contrasting relationship between two ideas joined together

Charged/emotional diction
Word choice that evokes emotion

Fallacies errors in reasoning that make an argument less valid or weak

Begging the question Taking for granted something that really needs proving

Either or reasoning Presents only two sides to an issue

Hasty generalization Drawing a general or premature conclusion on the basis of one or two cases

Card stacking Only presenting the positive side of the argument (or the negative side of the opposition)

bandwagon When an argument is presented as everyone else is in agreement with it; it is the “winning” side Everyone else is doing it; it is the “Winning” side

Glittering Generalities
Using words that have little meaning Uses appealing words and images to sell the product; Generally accepted virtues are used to stir up favorable emotions. Words such as “democracy,” “family values,” “rights,” or “American” are used in a positive sense. Message- if you buy this item, you will be using a wonderful product, and it will change your life Example: Blue Bell ice cream’s slogan, “Blue Bell homemade ice cream tastes just like the good old days!”
