3 Board of Trade Part of British government Located in London
Supposedly responsible for most aspects of colonial administration However, really just advised the government on policy Authority was divided between numerous offices and agencies Somewhat ignored colonies

4 Salutary Neglect Salutary—healthy or something that is good
Neglect—to ignore or leave out Parliament neglected or overlooked most trade regulations as long as the colonies remained loyal. As long as the colonies kept sending raw materials to England and buying British goods.

5 Types of Colonies Proprietary Colony—owned by a small group of people. The proprietors appointed the governor. Corporate Colony—owned by a company with many investors. The company appointed the governor. Royal—owned by the king. The king appointed the governor

6 Colonial Government Governor Council Assembly
Appointed by king or proprietors Leader of the colony Council Appointed by the governor Advised the governor Assembly Elected by people of colony Power to make laws and to tax

7 Powers of Governors The Power to Call the assembly into session
Veto laws passed by the assembly Appoint judges and government officials Grant pardons Control trade Command the military

8 Weaknesses of Governors
Had to follow regulations written by the Board of Trade Served for only a brief time Were usually from England and not from the colony Salary paid by the assembly

9 Power of the Assemblies
Were from the colony Most served for years There long before the governor came, and there long after the governor left “Power of the Purse”—The power to control taxes, money and revenue Most were well-connected and highly respected Most were well-educated, skilled in writing and speaking.
