1 Storming of the Bastille
July 14, Hundreds of angry people in Paris stormed the Bastille (a medieval fort/prison) in search of gunpowder. Signals the start of the revolution. Peasants around France heard the news and begin to revolt against their lords. Modern Celebrations

2 Peasants became outlaws – burn documents, destroy nobles homes.
The Great Fear Rebellion spread across the villages, rumors that nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize peasants created PANIC… Peasants became outlaws – burn documents, destroy nobles homes.

3 March on Versailles Rebellion spreads but there is no cohesiveness with the revolt October 5, 1789 After months of Bread shortages seven thousand women marched 12 miles from Paris to Versailles to demand bread and broke into the palace King Louis XVI promises bread and the Royal family accompanied the women back to Paris The Royal family would never return to Versailles…

4 Marie Antoinette Came from a wealthy Austrian family.
Had not associated with poor. Very extravagant. When asked to help the poor with food she allegedly said: “Let them eat cake.”
