1 Unit 5 Vocabulary: Unrest and Revolt in Texas – 1821-1836

2 Federalists- those in Mexico who supported the establishment of a federal system of government like that in the United States

3 Centralists- those in Mexico who favored a strong central government with power concentrated among a few leaders

4 Revolution- a forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system

5 Siege- surrounding a fortification to cut it off from supplies

6 Delegate- a person acting as a representative for others

7 Republic- type of government with elected representatives

8 Courier- a messenger generally delivering correspondence

9 Treaty an agreement between national governments

10 Ad Interim- temporary

11 War Council- a conference of high-ranking military or naval officers, usually for discussing a major emergency or war problem Texas Rangers were created in 1823 by Stephen F. Austin

12 Retreat- (of an army) withdraw from enemy forces as a result of their superior power or after a defeat Battle of San Jacinto

13 Reinforcements- extra personnel sent to increase
the strength of an army or similar force

14 Cavalry- (in the past) soldiers who fought on horseback
