Cellphones Away when Class Begins. This is common sense. I shouldn’t have to tell you this Every. Single. Day. Excessive gum chewing will result in a phone call home and a disciplinary essay. Having more than 3 tardies will result in a phone call home and after school detention. Food Allowed: Water, coffee, tea. Cheetos AWAY Grading & Late work Policy All late work during Semester 2 is grades 50% off in addition to incorrect / incomplete answers. Unless there is a situation beyond your control, in which case I need a note and signature of some kind as to the reason of your absence. Example: 20 points = 10 points.

Essential Question: What are the three main landform regions of India? What are the major rivers in India? What climate types does India have? What natural resources does India have?

Essential Question: What outside groups affected India’s history? What was the Mughal Empire like? How did Great Britain gain control of India? Why was India divided when it became independent?

12 Outside Groups affected India’s history:
Indo-Aryans (1500 BCE) – Took control of northern India; spoke a form of Sanskri; formed the beginnings of Hindu. Islam – Muslims raided India (1000 CE); Delhi sultanate gained control of northern India, which becomes a center of Islamic art, culture, and Science; Islam expands into the Deccan. Central Asian invasion begins the Mughal Empire (early 1500’s).

13 The Mughal Empire: Babur defeats the Delhi sultan and takes over northern India Akbar reunited the empire and expanded into central India Akbar’s reign was a golden age of architecture, painting, and poetry. Mughals were Muslim but Hinduism remained dominant. 1600s-1700s – Wars and revolts weaken the empire.

16 Great Britain gains control of India:
1600s – English East India Company wins rights to trade in the Mughal Empire; takes control of small trading posts. English East India Company builds a military force of sepoys; the company controlled more than half of India by the mid-1850s. British change the economy to benefit British industry.

British government began to rule directly after crushing the Indian Mutiny in 1857. Mohandas K. Gandhi’s protests increased pressure on Britain to leave India.

India’s Division: Post World War II – British decide to leave India. India’s Muslims demand a separate state. 1947 – British divide India into two independent countries: India and Pakistan.

38 Birth determines position in society.
The Caste System: Birth determines position in society. Higher castes cannot even touch lower castes. Dalits do work that higher castes consider unclean. The caste system was officially abolished after independence but remains a strong force. Government is working to improve the economic conditions for the Dalits.

Hindi is the official language and is spoken by 30 percent of the people. There are 24 languages with a million or more speakers. English is common in government, business, and higher education.

42 India’s Government: Democratic — based on Britain’s parliament; shares power with states; politics marked by violence and assassinations; border disputes with Pakistan over Kashmir
