How to write a cover letter
Landing a job Bruin style. Week 3

What is a cover letter? One page document.
Presents a case as to why YOU should be hired for the job. Briefly outlines how your skills align with the job you want and how you would fit into the company’s culture Even if a job doesn’t require a letter, sending one will make your application stand out!

Let’s get to it! Students get out a piece of paper or use a chrome book to open a google doc. Step 1: Find the contact person you are sending your application and resume to at the job where you are applying. The cover letter is addressed to this person. If you do not know the name this person, write, To Whom it May Concern: Step 2: Find the address of the company

After your letter has been appropriately addressed
Paragraph 1: Introduce yourself to the hiring manager or company. Explain what position you are seeking and how you are uniquely qualified for the job. Explain what skills do you possess that will make you a great fit. Now write this…portion on the google doc.

Paragraph 2: Fill in the places of the resume that you cannot describe. Identify how your accomplishments in prior jobs will make you successful in the current position. This is where you talk about how responsible you are as well as your dedication to seeing a job through. Now, write this part.

Paragraph 3: Further explain your resume and experience Conclude the letter outlining how excited you are to hear from the organization. This is the call to action paragraph. This is where you are seeking to interview. Write this last one.

Concluding tips Be sure to customize the cover letters.
Each company is different and each position is different. While your cover letters may be similar, be sure to review select portions such as contact information and job title.
