4 Lisboa Workshop Objectives
COAST progress report To identify common types within ecoregions / ecoregion complexes To select common types for intercalibration & pressures To share information on the development of classification tools To clarify future role of COAST within CIS phase II.

5 European Typology Framework
1. Atlantic Ocean 2. Norwegian Sea 3. Barents Sea 4. North Sea 5. Baltic Sea 6. Mediterranean Sea

6 Typology Framework - Annex II System B
Mandatory factors latitude, longitude tidal range salinity Optional factors exposure depth the others Agreed a common framework for the use of typology factors. This is documented in the guidance. Lead - Germany

8 Typology (Many MS are still drafting or testing typology)
MS typologies are being transposed on to the Heinrich wall paper to identify true common types.

9 Ecoregions / Ecoregion Complex
Micro Meso Macro Tidal Range Salinity Oligo - Polyhaline Euhaline Baltic Mediterranean Atlantic Ocean Norwegian Sea Barents Sea North Sea Baltic and Med separate out on the tidal range and salinity factors. North East Atlantic incorporates all combinations and is the most complex system with the most variability. It is anticipated that this will be reflected in the complexity of the biological communities.

10 Baltic Coastal Intercalibration Types
Because of structur of the Baltic, North Sout salinity gradient, types for intercalibration tend to be between only 2 member states at a time.

11 Baltic Transitional Intercalibration Types
No transitional waters fitting the Directive definition

12 Mediterranean Coastal Intercalibration Types
Present in all mediterranean member States

13 Mediterranean Transitional Intercalibration Types ?
Transitional lagoons Large river mouths (Ebro, Po & Rhone) Umleitung

14 North East Atlantic Coastal Intercalibration Types

15 North East Atlantic Coastal Intercalibration Types

16 North East Atlantic Transitional Intercalibration Types
One main North East Atlantic Estuary type? To be confirmed

17 Pressures The sea is under pressure from almost all catchment activities Consensus: that intercalibration on the impacts of a single pressure is likely to be very limited.

18 Baltic Pressures

19 Mediterranean Pressures
Eutrophication Coastal modification Urbanisation NE Atlantic/North Sea Pressures All

20 The “Can of Worms” Concept

21 Intercalibration Worm Issue: Type-specific or Site-specific?
