3. What is Reconstruction?
Reconstruction in Georgia was a time of major change in the state following the devastation of the Civil War. Though this era lasted for a relatively short period of time ( ), its impact on the state is still evident today. After the Civil War, much of Georgia was decimated after Sherman’s March and four years of fighting. Over 40,000 Georgians had been killed or wounded and many had lost their land entirely. Due to the damage inflicted, the United States attempted to reconstruct the South and used three different plans to do so.
