1 Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
By Ethan Glover

2 Use of Micro-Features (Editing)
The editing is fast paced, some quick pans are incorporated too which puts emphasis on the panic the main characters are feeling throughout the film.  No large period of time is ever skipped in this film which has the effect of further immersing the viewer in the hectic life of Pepa.  The linear story-telling makes it feel as if you have lived through an entire day by the time you have finished the film.

3 Use of Micro Features (Sound)
Non-diegetic music is incorporated multiple times to enhance the style of some scenes.  Some foley sounds are exaggerated and unrealistic to make impacts seem larger than they would really be, and example of this is the record that gets thrown at the head of the lawyer.

4 Use of Micro Features (Cinematography and Mise-en-scene)
A green screen is used multiple times to show a city skyline, due to the film's very small budget this green screen is not very well disguised but this adds to the eccentric and bright style of the film which is what the cinematography of the film is all about. The mise-en-scene ties in with this style, bright objects tend to clutter the screen stylishly, for example the plants and beach ball in the shot to the left.

5 Narrative Structure In media-res opening which forces the audience to question what is going on. It also has the effect of making the opening seem more hectic. The narrative focuses across just one day in the life of the main charcater. Some actions from characters seem unexpected and work purely as plot devices. For example when Candela decides to suddenly jump off a balcony it seems out of character and over-exaggerated, it seems to be there to purely move characters out of one of the rooms and progress the plot.

6 Themes There is a theme of ambiguity, none of the characters seem to have an idea of what is really happening and they believe it to be worse than it is which is often the motive behind their actions.  Heavy focus on female characters, almost all main characters are female.

7 Representation Women are presented as being insane, they are willing to kill someone for not wanting to be with them anymore and this is the protagonist of the film.  Men are presented as mostly evil and not caring about women, one of the protagonists who is supposed to be a likeable character cheats on his fiance and the villain male character also cheats on his wife.

8 Messages and values The overall message shown by the film is not to have affairs and if your partner is having an affair then you should not try to kill them and instead just leave them.  Values seems to be a grey area, all of the characters have done something wrong or do something wrong whilst they are supposedly changing into a better person. This reflects Pedro Almodovar as someone with an unusual moral compass.
