The following question came from the 2005 School Certificate exam. Changing relations with Asia – explain how Australia’s social and cultural history has been affected by these changes. (In your answer write about the cause and effects of the changes and LINK the cause and effects of the changes)

3 What is the UN? The UN is an international body designed to prevent future wars. Started after WWII, Australia has played a major role in both the foundation and continuation of the UN as an international mediator. The UN has expanded to protect human rights and also world heritage sites (UNESCO).

5 What is Australia’s Role in the UN?
Australia has been involved with the UN from the very beginning. DR. Evatt (Opposition Leader of the Labour Party) was the first President of the UN General Assembly. Australia has since been involved in several UN peacekeeping missions such as the Korean War, the First Gulf War and East Timor.

6 Conflict with the UN Australia has not always followed to directives of the UN and has generally followed the USA against the resolutions of the UN during the War on Terror. The invasion of Iraq was not sanctioned by the UN yet Australia and the Coalition of the Willing followed the United States in the 2003 invasion.

14 UNESCO UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Its stated purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and the human rights and fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the UN Charter.

15 Australia and UNESCO Australia is a key partner for UNESCO in the Asia Pacific region. Over the past year, for example, Australia has been heavily involved with the establishment of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS). Conservation of biodiversity is also an area of concern for Australia. There are 13 MAB biosphere reserves in Australia, which is also involved the preparation of international guidelines for the protection of sacred natural sites within these reserves.

19 The Colombo Plan One of the most enduring of the foreign aid organisations to which Australia belongs is the Colombo Plan. Formed in 1951 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the plan aims to give foreign aid to emerging South Asian and South-East Asian countries in the form of education, health, food and training programs.
