DENSITY… Big Daddy “D”
2
1) Definition of Density...
Density is a comparison of how much matter there is in a certain amount of space. Tells us how tightly MASS is packed into an object.
3
Which one is more dense? Which ball has MASS more tightly packed together? Black ball or Iron ball How can you tell? Which square has Mass more tightly packed together?
4
Which one is more dense? Acitivty: Students in Classroom OR Students in Hallway??? Hallway Çlassroom
5
What is the formula for density?
Density = Mass OR mass ÷ volume. Volume Unit of Measurement for density: g or _g_ cm mL Why are these the units for density? ALWAYS REMEMBER UNITS!
6
3) Tricks to remember Density…
Density is a relationship between MASS & VOLUME. Mass and Volume are in LOVE. The symbol for LOVE is a What letter does the top half of the heart look like? M the bottom half? V
7
Tricks to remember Density…
Mountains are over Valleys
8
4) Important things to remember…
1 mL = 1 cm3 Unit of measurement for Density of a LIQUID is g/mL Unit of measurement for Density of a SOLID is g/cm3 Density of WATER = 1 g/mL If you have 10 grams of water, how many mL?
9
5) Relationship of Density…
The relationship is MASS VOLUME OR Mass DIVIDED by Volume *This relationship tells us how tightly mass is packed into an object.
10
Solving problems using DENSITY….
11
Let’s try a density problem together
Frank has a paper clip. It has a mass of 9g and a volume of 3cm3. What is its density? Frank also has an eraser. It has a mass of 3g, and a volume of 1cm3. What is its density?
12
Work on these problems with your neighbor.
Jack has a rock. The rock has a mass of 6g and a volume of 3cm3. What is the density of the rock? Jill has a gel pen. The gel pen has a mass of 8g and a volume of 2cm3. What is the density of the gel pen?
13
Now, try these on your own.
Ima Fraid has a watch. It has a mass of 4g and a volume of 2cm3. What is the density of the watch? Cat Woman has a wallet. It has a mass of 15g and a volume of 5cm3. What is the density of the wallet?
14
3 Density Rules Rule #1 When mass stays the same but volume increases, Density does the opposite at the volume.
15
3 Density Rules Rule #2 When volume stays the same but Mass changes, Density copies the mass,
16
3 Density RULES.. Rule #3 When BOTH mass and volume increase or BOTH decrease, density stays the same!
17
Liquid Layers If you pour together liquids that don’t mix and have different densities, they will form liquid layers. The liquid with the highest density will be on the bottom. The liquid with the lowest density will be on the top.
18
Liquid Layers Check out this picture from your book. Which layer has the highest density? Which layer has the lowest density? Imagine that the liquids have the following densities: 10g/mL g/mL. 6g/mL g/mL. Which number would go with which layer?
19
Liquid Layers – Try with your neighbor
Which liquid has the highest density? Which liquid has the lowest density? Which liquid has the middle density?
20
Liquid Layers – Try on your own!
Imagine that the liquids on the right have the following densities: 15g/mL g/mL 3g/mL g/mL 7g/mL g/mL Match the colors to the correct densities. 3g/mL 7g/mL 9g/mL 10g/mL 12g/mL 15g/mL
21
Review What is the formula for density?
What happens if you pour together liquids that have different densities? Will the liquid on the top have the highest or lowest density? Will the liquid on the bottom have the highest or lowest density?
22
Super Scientist Question of the Day
Jake has a book, a ruler, and a balance. How can Jake find the density of the book with the tools he has?
