1900’s movies became popular Projection- enlarges images Movie stars wanted to remain thin Doctors recommended nicotine to remain thin

FDR is president & he used cigarettes WWII-Military (males) Hero worship Given cigarette breaks Relief from duty caused many to use 1961 – 80% of tobacco used in cigarettes

HEALTH DANGERS Nicotine - stimulant is NOT the cause of cancer
Used as a bug killer Appetite suppressant; & increase cholesterol retention leading to arteriolosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) Addictive & habit forming Constricts blood vessels

Cigarettes are inhaled and the lungs are coated with tar One pack a day = one cup of tar in the lungs per year
