Washburn Athletics Update
Football Football had a very good fall when you consider that they were down in numbers this year. They finished their regular season record 4-4 in District Football Conference play. Homecoming football game was a great night with over 2,000 people in attendance. This year our team was highlighted on Sunday Night Football as the game of the week when the Vikings and Packers played. They also participated in “The Greater Game” program started by former Viking and Raven Matt Birk, teaching the players about leadership and developing their character. There were only 15 schools chosen to participate in the first year program. Several of the players this year received All-District Honors, Seniors Savion Johnson, D’Angelo Moore who all was named Defensive player of the Year, Juniors Peyton Krause and Sedrique Ametor. Others received Honorable Mention All-District were Senior Kane Myhre, Juniors Ta’Kyle Brantley and Kavin Olive along with Sophomore Latrell Bible. Girls Tennis Another great season for the Girls Tennis program, under the leadership of new coach, Jim Mayer they finish in 2nd place this year in conference play. There were 3 members of the team who earned All-City Honors: Juniors Emma Anderson and Cate Dymit and Freshman Frances Mayer. Coach Mayer has grown the number of participants in his first year with a large number of middle school girls along with the freshmen class. Look for the Lady Miller to battle for that championship next year. Girls Soccer Conference Champs for the 5th season in a row. They are currently ranked in the top 10 in the state once again and had an overall regular season record of This year were able to win the Section Championship game over Wayzata to go to state for the 2nd time in three years. Congrats to Junior Charlotte DeVaughn for being selected to the 1st team All-State and All-City teams, Junior Lydia Ruppert and Senior Kaitlyn Villars for being selected to 2nd team All-State. Kaitlyn also was selected to the All-City team along with the following teammates Senior Taylor Cottew, Junior Hannah Heinemann Sophomore Marli Rajacich. The team won the 6AA Section championship game over Wayzata to go to the Class AA State Tournament where they finished in 4th place. Boys & Girls Cross Country Both Boys and Girls finished the season as the conference champions again. Three years in a row for the boys and fourth year in a row for the girls. The girls were ranked 7th in the state all season, the boys were ranked 11th. Sophomore Emily Covert was rated #1 overall for all girls cross country in Class AA. Other awards this year include both teams winning the Blaine Invitational, Twin City Championships, Girls Once again Coach CG and his staff have both programs receiving regional ranking. Four members of the team qualified for the state meet, Joseph Minor and Matt Cota for the boys and Emily Covert and Grace Dickel for the girls. Both Joseph and Emily finished 8th overall and which earned them both All-State honors. Girls Swimming Washburn girls again lead the way on the District team with over 45 members on the team (we really need another pool in Mpls to practice in). Section tournament begins November 10th, Coach Sanders believe we’ll have a few girls participating in the Swim and Dive State Tournament.

Equipment and Facility
Volleyball After an amazing season last year where they were undefeated most of the season and lost a number of seniors Coach Nelson and the Lady Miller Volleyball players are back to back Mpls City Conference Champs. This year the team finished the regular season with an 18-8 overall record, and the exciting news is they are only losing 2 seniors off this year’s team, should be exciting year next year. Played St Paul Highland Park in the Twin City Championship game which was an exciting match and the Lady Millers prevailed in a 5 set match winning 3 sets to 2. Next up is the first round section match against Mpls South. Boys Soccer A great season for the boys soccer team and longtime Coach Aaron Percy. This fall they won the Mpls City Conference title, a win in the John Sylvester Cup over Southwest, were the Section Runner-Up. In addition they also had a couple players receive All State Honors, Senior Juan Louis was selected to the 1st team, and Junior Cooper Wells was selected to the 2nd team. In addition to All State Honors Juan and Cooper received All-City Honors as well along with their Senior teammates Max Lindemann, Luke Peterson, and Ben Brauer. For the first time ever in Washburn Boys Soccer history one of our players received the Mr. Soccer Award. This award is given to the most outstanding Senior boys soccer player in the state and the 2016 award winner was Juan Louis. Equipment and Facility Fund Raised and mission accomplished: New Wall Mural for Athletic Hallway, New Hurdles and Pole Vault Pit for Track Team Still in need and fund raising for the following items: Golf Cart, Wrestling Mats, Shooting Machine, Nordic Ski Uniforms, New Bench Chairs , Field Video Camera, New Trophy Cases, Outdoor Storage Shed. Dunkers Grants This fall we were fortunate again to receive a few grants for several of our teams from the Twin Cities Dunkers. The Dunkers awarded $6159 in grants in October. Award went to Boys Soccer, Girls Badminton Boys Tennis.
