2 The Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance
Between the two World Wars more than 1 million African-Americans moved from the south to the north for various reasons Discrimination reaching back to the days of slavery Industrial job availability in new northern factories Boll weevil infestation in the southern cotton fields The influx of African-Americans in the north created a situation that generated an incredible amount of art by African-American artists Alain Locke coined the term “Harlem Renaissance” because of the importance of this section of Manhattan during this outburst of art
