What’s your team number?! NOW USE THE GREEN SHEET FROM YESTERDAY Go over the answers or complete them with your partner(s). Get your BPJR ready to EXPLAIN what you have made so far to two or three other teams We will start sharing with other teams in about 5 minutes. Please allow everyone to think by talking quietly with your team members whilst following the instructions and answering questions.

6 Instructions for Meeting of the Minds/Discussion board
Each team is going to talk about their BPJR design using their BPJR model, pictures and LNB. Use the answers to the questions on the GREEN handout to guide you. EXAMPLE OF HOW: Team 1 is going to share their ideas to another two teams (Teams 2, and 3). Sharing check list on the next screen. While Team 1 is sharing their ideas, the other teams are going to note down ideas etc. on the organizer on the reverse side of the green sheet. Do NOT interrupt Team 1 while sharing. ONLY when Team 1 has finished sharing (3 min) can the other teams ask questions and/or provide some suggestions. The process will be repeated for teams 2 and 3 Each team gets about 3 min to discuss their model/design. Then about 2 min question/suggestion session. STAY ON TASK. ONLY CHANGE TEAM SHARING WHEN TOLD TO DO SO!

Share how your BPJR is designed to consider each of the following: Newton’s 1st Law (rest, motion in straight line, unbalanced forces) Newton’s 2nd law (acceleration, force, MASS) Newton’s 3rd Law (action force, equal opposite reaction force, result) Drag (Air resistance) Friction (Rubbing surfaces)

The names should be: connected to the concept of a Balloon Powered Jet Racer. connected to the concept of motion and Newton’s laws etc.! connected to each other (team name and jet racer name)! ‘humorous’ or ‘clever’ or a ‘play on words’.

13 Explain the findings! Explanations should include the answers to following questions What makes the jet racer move forward? In which direction is the jet racer moving? In which direction is the air that rushes out the balloon moving? What are some variables that can be manipulated to improve the jet racer’s speed? How will you experiment with the nozzle, letting the air out from the balloon? Why? What have you thought about the mass of your BPJR? What have you thought about drag or air resistance? What have you thought about good old friction!

16 Meeting of the minds/Discussion board
Talk about how you can apply Newton’s laws of motion to this project. Give concrete examples from the project to help explain your answer. List at least 3 problems you encountered while building or testing your car and explain what you did to solve them. Explain why some friction is necessary for wheeled vehicles to move. Use evidence from the trials to support your answer. What have you thought about the problem of drag or air resistance? How is this connected to Newton’s 1st law? What have you thought about the problem of good old friction! How is this connected to Newton’s 1st law? Why is some friction useful? Give two tips or pieces of advice to someone who had to construct a balloon-powered car?

18 Action - Reaction The forces exerted by two objects on each other are often called an action-reaction force pair. Either force can be considered the action force or the reaction force. Action and reaction force pairs don’t cancel because they act on different objects.

19 Newton’s Third Law Newton’s Third Law of Motion states: for every action force, there is an equal but opposite reaction force. This means that when you push on a wall, the wall pushes back on you with a force equal in strength to the force you exerted.

Balloon demonstration. Push a pencil point into your hand … what do you notice? (AF and RF?) Push your hand against the corner of the lab bench … what do you notice? How do you swim? What are the action-reaction force pairs for a girl kicking a soccer ball?

Spare ones on the side of the lab … help yourself. Make sure the box has your name on it: Markers and labels at the back of the lab Make sure it’s in the right location: Signs on the cupboards over the back bench to show you where. Keep it neat and tidy please! Thank you!

24 Feed back about BPRC Lab Rubric
HOW are you persevering and working hard to achieve a level 3 for PSR? Did you have partner voice or an outside voice while making constructive comments during the entire lab. SAFETY! Were you on task the entire time or were you involved in side conversations with your teammates and others. Were you able to complete the work on time and demonstrate good teamwork skills. Were you polite and respectful towards yourself, your teacher, your team and the materials in the classroom. Be honest with yourself and give a PSR score for yesterday’s lab. Read the rubric and identify the areas to work on today … to achieve at least a level 3.5

25 Things to keep in mind while designing the BPJR
What are the problems you came across while trying to make the hot wheel car move with the help of balloon? Did you experiment with the different type of nozzles? Which one worked best? How can you make your car move from back to front instead of going from side to side? What are the other factors you are thinking to improve upon while designing the BPJR? Don’t forget the wooden block! REM: The BPJR has to perform THREE times!
