Schematic presentation of the role of Gli1+ adventitial mesenchymal stem cells in atherogenesis and vascular calcification. Gli1+ adventitial mesenchymal stem cell–like cells are vascular smooth muscle cell progenitors. After arterial injury, Gli1+ cells contribute to neointima formation and arterial repair. Gli1+ adventitial cells form osteoblast-like cells during vascular calcification. Genetic ablation of Gli1+ cells before injury abolishes vascular calcification. VSMCs, vascular smooth muscle cells. Reprinted from Kramann R, Goettsch C, Wongboonsin J, et al. Adventitial cells transform into osteoblast-like cells and drive vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease.
