1 How to Breed for Some Popular Varieties of Angelfish
A presentation for The Angelfish Society, July 20, 2008 By Tamar Stephens

2 About this Presentation
If you are still learning about angelfish genetics, this presentation is for you. All new angelfish breeders upon getting a matched pair of some beautiful phenotype, ask themselves, “Will they breed true?” This presentation looks at a couple of very beautiful and popular varieties of angelfish. It tells you the easiest cross to make to breed the variety. It tells you whether they will breed true or will give other phenotypes in the offspring.

3 How can you breed for Black Lace?
Black Lace have the genotype D/+. This means they have one dark allele (D) paired with one wild type allele (+)

4 To breed for 100% Black Lace…
Cross a double dark black (D/D) x silver (+/+). The offspring will inherit one dark allele (D) from the first parent and one wild type allele (+) from the other parent, to produce 100% black lace (D/+). X

5 Will Black Lace Breed True?

6 Black Lace x Black Lace D/+ x D/+
If we use a punnet square we can see that we will get the following offspring: 25% D/D – double dark black; 50% D/+ - black lace; 25% +/+ - silver Alleles from Male D + D/D Double dark black (25%) D/+ Black lace (25%) +/+ Silver (25%) So the answer is no. Black lace do not breed true. You will only get 50% black lace offspring. Alleles from Female

7 How can you breed for Turquoise?
Turquoise have the genotype D/D – S/S: a double dose of black, and a double dose of stripeless (which makes them blushing).

8 To breed for turquoise…
Cross a black blushing (D/D – S/S) with a blushing (S/S). All the offspring will have the genotype D/+ - S/S (turquoise). X

9 Will turquoise breed true?

10 Turquoise x Turquoise D/+ - S/S x D/+ - S/S
A punnet square shows we will get the following offspring: 25% D/D – double dark black; 50% D/+ - black lace; 25% +/+ - silver Alleles from Male D - S + - S D/D – S/S Black Blushing D/+ - S/S Turquoise (25%) Turquoise D/+ - S/S (25%) +/+ - S/S Blushing (25%) So the answer is no. Turquoise do not breed true. You will get 50% turquoise. Alleles from Female

11 Credits The photos for this presentation were selected from the TAS phenotype library. Unfortunately, in some cases the names of the contributors have become separated from the photos, so I am not able to credit each individual. However, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the TAS collection of photos through participation in photo contests and through direct contribution to the phenotype library.

12 That’s all folks! I hope you enjoyed learning how to breed for a couple of popular varieties of angelfish! Now back to the chat room for questions / answers / discussion!
