4 Winning The War-Battles in N. Africa and Europe
During the 1930’s The Axis Nations prepared for war Germany invaded Europe and Soviet Union Japan’s Army & Navy took Pacific region (including Philippines) U.S. and Allies needed time to strike back Late 1942, American forces joined Allies in N. Africa who were fighting German and Italian forces In 1943, Axis troops surrendered to Allies in N. Africa

A month later, Allies struck again-attacked Axis soldiers in Sicily Allies invaded Italy’s mainland while Germans retreated The Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American pilots, flew many successful missions over Italy Germany lost many troops fighting Soviet Union Soviet forces defeated Germans at the battle of STALINGRAD Soviets began to push the Germans west

6 Winning the War: D-day & Victory
June 6, 1944: D-Day 200,000 Allied soldiers invaded Northern France and 1,000,000 soldiers landed in France in 10 days This allowed the Allies to move towards Germany and Soviet soldiers were coming in from the east May, 1945: Germany surrendered and Allies declared May 8: “Victory in Europe Day” or “V-E Day”

Japan Had many victories after Pearl Harbor Was defeated at the Battle of Midway by U.S., led by Admiral Chester Nimitz, using aircraft carriers Battle of Midway U.S. had more power in Pacific Japan still had islands in the region Island hopping Allies skipped over islands guarded by Japanese Islands were captured by Allies to attack Japan at closer range

American forces were close enough to invade Japan President Harry Truman believed that many people would die in an invasion President Truman believed that their secret weapon, the atomic bomb would end the war August 6, 1945: bomb dropped and 100,000 people died in Hiroshima; August 9, 1945: atomic bomb dropped in Nagasaki August 14, 1945, Hirohito surrendered and was known as “V-J Day” or “Victory in Japan Day”

After the war ended, Allied forces found that Nazis killed many people in concentration camps Large number of people were beaten, starved and killed It was estimated that 12 million people were killed in such camps Of the 12 million, 6 million of them were Jewish people
