Work on Paper 1 (due Thursday)
Goal: Work on Paper 1 (due Thursday)
3
Correct or eliminate incorrect “facts” or unsubstantiated inferences.
In groups of 3 or 4, create a list with as many facts and inferences as possible about “young Fleming” and “old Fleming.” Young Fleming Old Fleming Facts: Inferences: Facts: Inferences: Write your findings on the board, but don’t duplicate information already written. Correct or eliminate incorrect “facts” or unsubstantiated inferences. You are free to use class-generated information when you revise your draft.
4
Have each group member read his/her draft aloud.
As you listen to the other drafts, take notes on the content: How well does it “illustrate mastery of the subject”? How “appropriate, relevant, and compelling” is it? How well does it “[convey] the writer’s understanding” of the story? Use these notes to help improve your paper as you revise it.
5
Individually or with help from your group, evaluate the degree to which your draft shows your “understanding of context, audience, and purpose,” as well as the degree to which it “is responsive to the assigned task.” Revise or rewrite as necessary.
6
Check (or get help checking) your paper for clarity and correctness:
Do you stick with present tense? (“Crane says…” “Fleming is…”) Does every sentence make sense by itself? (Read it aloud.) Are the spelling and punctuation correct (i.e., conventional)? You are welcome to get proofreading help as needed. (You may use the Writing Center, a roommate, girlfriend/boyfriend, upperclass cadet, or anybody else willing to help – but you make the final call about what goes into your paper.)
