Hernando sailed the Atlantic Ocean and was the first European to explore Florida and the southeastern U.S. He sailed from Puerto Rico. He made 3 voyages.

He was the first to bring livestock on his expedition.
He wanted to claim land for himself and Spain.
He was also searching for Gold and a way to China.

He reached Florida and traveled Northwest to explore.

As a teenager, de Soto trained with Spanish captains in Latin America, where he learned the arts of war.
By 1519 or so he had a reputation as a fierce fighter and expert horseman.
