In the glomerulus of vertebrate kidneys, podocytes perform the blood filtration function (marked with red arrows). The insect nephrocyte is anatomically, molecularly, and functionally similar to the glomerular podocyte. Black arrows indicate the direction of flow of blood through the renal tubule, and blue arrows represent rebalancing of blood ions and water through further filtration in the renal tubule.
