2 Timeline of the Knights
1085 A community of monks was established in Jerusalem. These knights were responsible for looking after the sick in the Hospital of St. John. The monks later became a military order to help pilgrims who were travelling in the Holy Lands. 1530 The Knights came to Malta after the Turks sent them out of Rhodes. The Knights of Malta stayed on our island for 268 years. They built hospitals, watch towers, a capital city, and forts to protect the island. 1798 The Knights of Malta left our island after Napoleon Bonaparte’s fleet attacked Malta.
