1 Match’em up activity

2 Advs and disadvs of topologies.
What goes where Ring Star Bus Cable length restricts the number of devices that can be connected Messages sent between two stations pass through all devices…no server needed Centralised layout offers simplicity It allows isolation of each device on a network Suitable for small networks The failure of any cable can cause network failure As more devices are connected – the slower it gets It relies on the correct functioning of the central hub – if that crashes – it all fails. Any changes to stations can have performance issues on the whole network Easy and cheap to install as a consequence of only a small quantity of cable

3 The order of communication on a network.
Stick it in order A source of infomation Transmitter to convert to compatible signals on the channel A communication channel A receiver to convert signals back so they can be read. Destination for the information

4 Pros and Cons of networks
Users can share software stored in system More straightforward to backup than standalones Need to employ a manager to oversee Stringent security measures needed such as firewalls to stop abuse. Files can be shared Pros Comms by electronic means Cons Can share common peripheral devices (printers) Risk of hacking especially over wide areas The cost of construction as well as the servers is high Security can be high – users cant see others profiles Users can share viruses Management of a large network is complicated , requires skill and knowledge If a fault occurs access to files will be lost Cost/effort is lower to maintain than stand alones
