Exercise 55 - Skills Slices and rollovers are useful interactive elements you can add to your Fireworks documents. Slices not only enable you to add features such as pop-up menues, but they also can be used to cut images into pieces that can be loaded progressively.

Exercise 54 - Terms Behavior handle – The handle in the middle of a slice that you use to add rollover effects to a slice. Disjoint rollover – A type of rollover where a rollover behavior attached to one slice changes the image that appears in a different place on the page.

Guides – Horizontal or vertical lines that show the edges of objects such as slices. Pop-up menu – A list of choices displayed when a user moves the mouse over an object or clicks a hotspot or slice. Slices – Segments of objects you create and use to add interactivity in other files and sites. States – A structure in a Fireworks document that allows you to create animations and rollover effects.

Exercise 55 - Notes About Slices You can create slices in your Fireworks image and save those slices as individual files. Slices are used most often to add interactivity to your site. You can draw slices or create them based on existing objects in your Fireworks document. Slices always occupy the Web layer of a Fireworks document.

Draw Slices with the Slice Tool When you draw Slices, Fireworks adds red guides to show the edges of the slices. Modify Slices You can use the Property inspector to set precise sizing values for the slice.

Working with Slices You can create slices in your Fireworks image and save those slices as individual files. Slices are used most often to add interactivity to your site. You can use slices in special elements, like pop-up menus, or use them to divide up large images into pieces that can be loaded progressively. You can draw slices or create them based on existing objects in your Fireworks document. Slices always occupy the Web layer of a Fireworks document. In Fireworks, you use states to store the alternate images that create a rollover effect. When the mouse pointer triggers a rollover, the object in one state is hidden and the object in the other state is displayed. Copyright © 2010 Pearson Education, Inc Publishing as Prentice Hall. Create Dynamic and Interactive Pages : Lesson 6, Exercise 55

Add Rollovers to a Slice You can see the contents of only one state at a time. Slices are visible across states. The easiest way to add a rollover is to click the behavior handle in the middle of the slice to display the behavior pop-up menu.

Add a disjoint Rollover You can use a disjoint rollover to add interactivity at a different position on the page from the spot that triggers the rollover. Disjoint rollovers can also be triggered by a button or hotspot.

Remove a Rollover You can remove a rollover behavior by clicking the blue line from the behavior handle. Remove all rollover behaviors by clicking the behavior handle and choosing Delete All Behaviors.
