Motif: Blind/ Sight This motif is seen throughout the entire book. This is seen both as a figurative motif as a literal one as well. The blindness represents how people want to avoid seeing the truth. An example of this blindness is also the prejudice that goes on. All this figuratively demonstrate to us that many of the characters lack understanding.

Examples An example of this motif is the Battle Royal in chapter 1. The boys are wearing a blindfold. This blindness represents their powerlessness to recognize their exploitation to the white men. The narrator only believed he was delivering a speech. He never realized that this was to happen.

Examples In Chapter 16 the narrator is giving a speech for the Brotherhood. He is unable to see due to the strong spotlight. This failure of sight connects to his lack of insight. He is unable to correctly give out his thoughts, making a speech that wasn’t good enough for most of the brothers.
