Human Body
2
The body has cells, tissues, and organs.
Body has many parts that work together as a system to help you grow and stay healthy. Cells (simplest) -> tissues -> organs -> systems (made up of organs) -> organism (highest level)
3
Organization
4
Cells Basic unit of life
Some organisms have only a single cell (ex. bacteria) In complex organisms (ex. humans) cells are specialized – perform specific tasks Ex. red blood cell – carries oxygen and nutrients from lungs to body
5
Tissues Group of cells that work together Four types:
Epithelial – boundary of inner/outer surfaces of body Nerve – messaging system Muscle - movement Connective – holds parts of body together
6
Organs Groups of tissues working together to perform a task
7
Organ Systems Interact And Are Dependent Upon Each Other
8
Skeletal System Skeletal system protects, supports, allows movement, produces blood cells, and stores minerals
9
Muscular System Muscular system allows body movement and maintains posture
10
Digestive System Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients
11
Circulatory System Transports nutrients, wastes, and other materials
12
Respiratory System Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between blood and air
13
Nervous System Detects sensation and controls most functions
14
Immune System Protects the body, controls the immune response, and fights disease
15
Excretory/Urinary Systems
Removes solid and liquid wastes from body
16
Endocrine System Helps with regulation of metabolism and other functions Ex. Insulin controls glucose (sugar) levels in the bloodstream
17
Homeostasis Homeostasis is a constant internal environment
The endocrine and nervous system work together to keep the body in homeostasis Example: Internal body temperature of approximately 98.6 ALL THE TIME
18
How well do you know the systems so far?
