In the valley near Dorking
treetops cluster like broccoli heads.
They are not the fresh green
of a child’s coloured landscape
but browns, pinks, khaki,
mustard and the soft greys
of a colony of corals.
The kestrels float, like predatory fish
looking for the quiver of a dying morsel
on the road ribboning beside the river
that created the valley.
The bruised clouds above
are lying on the surface of this sea;
above them, the true sky, blue air
but we are down here, in our diving bell,
driving through the autumn rain.
