How to set up successful graphs in SCIENCE class!
2
How to set up your graph!
3
How to set up your graph! X Axis
(This is for your independent variable)

(This is for your dependent variable)
How to set up your graph! Y Axis (This is for your dependent variable)

TAILS How does the number of smarties I eat affect my quiz grades. T - Title A – Axis (labeled with what you are measuring and a unit) Quiz grades (%) Y Axis = Dependent Variable Smarties eaten (#) X Axis = Independent Variable
7
Decide on an appropriate scale for each axis.
TAILS Decide on an appropriate scale for each axis. Choose a scale that lets you make the graph as large as possible for your paper and data T - Title A – Axis S – Scale
8
How to determine scale Number of smarties Quiz grade 5 30% 10 50% 15 65% 20 80% 25 95% Scale is determined by your highest & lowest number. In this case your scale would be from 5 to 25 for the X axis and 30 to 95 for the Y axis
9
How to determine Intervals
The interval is decided by your scale. In this case your scale would be from 5 to 25 for the X axis and 30 to 95 for the Y axis The best interval for the X would be to go by 5’s. The best interval for the Y would be to go by 20’s. Number of smarties Quiz grade 5 30% 10 50% 15 65% 20 80% 25 95%

TAILS T – Title A – Axis I – Interval S – Scale
The amount of space between one number and the next or one type of data and the next on the graph. The interval is just as important as the scale Choose an interval that lets you make the graph as large as possible for your paper and data Each line must be worth the same INTERVAL! Where to Plot the Variables
When plotting a graph, The independent variable is plotted on the X-axis the dependent variable in an experiment is always on the Y-axis. You can remember this by remembering hot chocolate. When you have hot chocolate, you use a dry mix.
14
Dry Mix Dry Mix The “D” is for dependent variable
The “i” is for independent variable Mix
