1 Lesson 3.1.1 – Teacher Notes Standard: Preparation for 8.F.A.1
Understanding of a function, (only one output per input). Chapter 8 - Further practice identifying functions. Lesson Focus: The focus of the lesson is to begin laying the foundation for multiple representations of functions with a primary focus on tables and rules. The definition of “function” is not given until chapter 8; however, the teacher can discuss how many outputs are possible with each input as they work through the problems. (3-1 and 3-2) I can recognize a function from a table. I can recognize a function from a graph. . Calculator: No Literacy/Teaching Strategy: Participation Quiz (3-1); Think-Ink-Pair-Share (3-1); Traveling Salesman (3-1)

2 Bell Work

3 You have been learning how to work with variables and how to find values for variables in equations. In this section, you will learn how to extend patterns and how to generalize your pattern with a rule. As you work with your team, use these questions to focus your ideas: How is the pattern growing? What is the rule? Is there another way to see it? How can you tell if your rule is correct?

4 3-1. Some people describe mathematics as “the study of patterns
3-1. Some people describe mathematics as “the study of patterns.” For each tile pattern below, draw Figure 1 and Figure 5 on graph paper. First try it individually, and then consult with your team. What does Figure 100 look like? Explain how you know. A. B. 3-1a Student eTool 3-1b Student eTool

5 3-2. FINDING RULES FROM TABLES
How can you describe the rule that governs a pattern or table?  Obtain the Lesson 3.1.1A Resource Page from your teacher and find the tables below.  As a class, find the pattern, fill in the missing parts, and extend each table with at least two more x → y pairs that fit the pattern.  Then generalize the pattern’s rule in words.
