1
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
2
Physical Properties Characteristics that can be observed WITHOUT changing the identity of the substance
3
Intensive Properties Properties that do not depend on the sample size present. Color Odor Luster - How shiny a substance is. Malleability - The ability of a substance to be beaten into thin sheets. Ductility - The ability of a substance to be drawn into thin wires. Conductivity - The ability of a substance to allow the flow of energy or electricity.
4
Intensive Properties Hardness - How easily a substance can be scratched. Melting/Freezing Point - The temperature at which the solid and liquid phases of a substance are in equilibrium at atmospheric pressure. Boiling Point - The temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid is equal to the pressure on the liquid (generally atmospheric pressure). Density - The mass of a substance divided by its volume
5
Extensive Properties Extensive - Properties that do depend on the sample size present. Mass - A measurement of the amount of matter in a object (grams). Weight - A measurement of the gravitational force of attraction of the earth acting on an object. Volume - A measurement of the amount of space a substance occupies. Length
6
Chemical Properties Can only be observed by changing the original substance Have to do with the atomic or molecular composition of matter How substances react with other substances
7
Chemical Properties Flammability pH Reactivity
8
Which physical property would be the same as a substance’s melting point?
Boiling point Specific heat Freezing point Solubility
9
Changes in Matter Physical: a change in any physical property of matter; NOT in the substance itself Chemical: the change of one substance into another substance (BRAND NEW SUBSTANCE)
10
Physical Change Gas Liquid Solid Solid Liquid Gas Solid Gas Gas Solid
Changes of state (phase) of matter Gas Liquid Solid Solid Liquid Gas Solid Gas Gas Solid
11
Physical Change Do you have the same substance that you started with?
12
Chemical Change Chemical: the change of one substance into another substance (BRAND NEW SUBSTANCE) Takes place on the molecular level; atoms rearranged
13
Chemical Change Signs of a chemical change Production of an odor
rotten egg Change in temperature endothermic/exothermic Change in color fruit ripens Formation of bubbles (gas) alka seltzer & water Formation of solid 2 liquids form a solid (precipitate) curdled milk
14
Chemical Change Signs are NOT conclusive evidence.
ONLY sure evidence of a chemical change is the production of a NEW substance!
15
Properties Used to ID an Unkown Substance
Physical properties: Density Heating properties Solubility Electric Properties Magnetic Properties
16
