1 Logical Arguments and Creating Proposals
Lecture 7

2 5 paragraph essay homework
Come to my office hours today if you want yours. Good things: - most people did the work - the handwriting was easy to read - many people had an ok introduction and conclusion

3 Things to make better Most people did not do what I asked.
The papers should be in a business style The English was sometimes too hard to understand. Make a decision and don’t just tell stories.

4 Things to make better A few people cheated.
Most people did not use all of the parts I asked for. Do not use Chinese translators unless...

5 Creating Logical Arguments

6 Logical Model Point Evidence Connection between evidence and point
Limit the argument if needed. -may, might, seems like…

7 Logical Examples Studies show that those that go to the doctor frequently live longer (evidence). You seldom go to the doctor (connection). You should go to the doctor more (point). Our company’s phone is much less popular than their’s. The only difference between our phones is that their phones are blue. Our phones should be blue.

8 Logical Examples “I think, therefore I exist.” (Descartes)
-If a thing that thinks must exist… “A hat is the only thing he would ever wear on his head. He is wearing that thing on his head. That thing must be a hat.”

9 When the Audience Doesn’t Agree
Respond to reader’s doubts Clarify possible misunderstanding Show that you are helping them

10 Emotional, Logical, and Principle based arguments
Both have their place Can be put together Appeals to principles (原则)

11 Examples Emotional: “My baby and I don’t have enough money to go home  .” “I have waited for you for years. Please don’t leave so easily .” “Eat your food. There are starving children in Africa .”

12 Examples On Principles (原则) “Be loyal to your company.”
“Work hard and you will succeed.” “Create a harmonious society.”

13 Practical Situations Showing you are right for a job
Convincing your parents to let you study something An advertisement for volunteers (志愿着)

14 Proposals

15 Reports A proposal is often a kind of report
To organize raw information Many kinds but two basic kinds - informational (describes) - analytical (persuades) Create them using what we have studied so far

16 What is a proposal It is like a report, but its purpose is to persuade. Explains: -what to do -why to do it and the costs -how to do it

17 Why write a proposal? Seek more resources (people, money, etc.)
Get permission to do something 3) Convince an outside organization to work with you (government, other company, etc.)

18 Kinds of Proposals Internal -less formal External
