1 BBL 3403 RESEARCH METHODS IN LITERATURE
DR. IDA BAIZURA BAHAR SLIDE D

2 Explication vs. Analysis

3 What is an Explication? Bringing meaning to a work of fiction
Drawing an inference from any explicit detail of the work Paying attention to the implications of the details e.g. rhyme, point of view, tone, to the meaning

4 What is an Explication?

5 What is an Analysis? Zooming in on how authors use specific details (elements) of the text, e.g. tone, setting and figurative language, to establish meaning. An analysis of a literary work may discuss: How the various components of an individual work relate to each other. How two separate literary works deal with similar concepts or forms. How concepts and forms in literary works relate to larger aesthetic, political, social, economic, or religious contexts.

6 What is an Analysis? When discussing these elements (details), you will want to make sure that you are making a specific, arguable point (thesis) about these elements. You will defend this point (thesis) with reasons and evidence drawn from the text.

7 What is an Analysis? When writing a literary analysis:
Be familiar with literary elements/terms Analyze specific elements. Make an a argument. Make appropriate use of secondary sources
