Microorganisms are everywhere. Understanding microorganisms (germs) help scientists learn how to prevent diseases. Some scientists thought bacteria grew from nonliving materials, an idea called spontaneous generation.

12 Louis Pasteur He developed a process, now known as pasteurization, in which heat is used to kill the bacteria. Killing the bacteria keeps milk fresh longer.
