Analyze - Floodplains Q: Each location and its corresponding floodplain creates a different flooding scenario. Which Q: Each location and its corresponding floodplain creates a different flooding scenario. Which floodplain creates the worst situation? floodplain creates the worst situation? A: The worst floodplain is the coastal floodplain. If a large hurricane were to hit the coast, Orso University would be prone to severe damage from the storm surge and wind. Repair costs would be through the roof, leaving less money in the schools budget. Also, it would take many weeks for the campus to return to normal, which would prevent students from learning. Ranking from best to worst 1) Shallow Floodplain – Flooding is minimal and only lasts for a few hours 2) Valley Floodplain – Flooding may be deep but it only lasts for a few days 3) Major River Floodplain – Flooding lasts a week or more 4) Coastal Floodplain – Devastating damage would be done if a hurricane hits, requiring a long recovery period.

Analyze – Fault Data Q: What types of problems do you anticipate from the fault data? A : Problems that may occur are severe damage to the foundation, road damage, safety hazards, and a loss of beauty and elegance. Ranking from worst to best 1) W. Tomball – No nearby faults. Any repairs to the structure would be seldom. Orso University will be best off in this location. 2) Northeast Houston – One minor fault. Any damage would not be very significant. 3) Downtown Central – A group of faults are nearby. Potential damage could be significant 4) Bayside – High number of faults. Frequent and costly repairs will be needed 5) Downtown East – Greatest amount of faults. The damage will be very severe, and repairs will be very costly and troublesome.

Analyze – Crime Data Q: Explain how crime data will affect the recruitment of future students. A: Crime Data will greatly influence a students choice to attend Orso University, as their safety is vital to the situation. The higher the crime level, the lower the safety of the students will be. In an area of high crime level, a student is more likely to be attacked or even killed. This would dissuade any potential students.
7
Analyze – Land Prices Q: Explain how land prices will affect the recruitment of future students. A: Land prices are also an important factor in the decision at hand. For example, it could determine how many students can afford to attend the college, the size of the college, and tuition costs and fees. Some students may not be able to afford the apartments in the area, or the tuition fees for that matter. Also, the more expensive the land, the less the school will have left over for their budget.
8
Board of Directors and Investors Q: Predict how the Board of Directors and investors will respond to both sets of data. A: Given the land prices and crime data, the Board of Directors and Investors will have generally the same response. Both would not want to have to spend too much on campus security, but of course they both would like a safe environment. Both would not want to have to spend too much on campus security, but of course they both would like a safe environment. Land price is also crucial, because blowing too much on the land will leave less for construction and the school budget. Investors would want a balance, meaning not spending too much money yet not spending too little, because they need the college to be successful to receive a return in their investment. Other Sources of Information Other sources of information Explanation of how the source would be beneficial Location that would likely benefit the most from your source Location that would likely benefit the least from your source. Population Density The higher the concentration of people, the worse traffic jams will be, and the campus may get overcrowded. W. Tomball Downtown Central Types of large industries in the area Orso University would need to provide programs corresponding with the industries of the area, so that students can receive employment once they leave college. Downtown Central W. Tomball Amount of reputable hospitals in the area Having reputable hospitals nearby mean that students with a disease or illness can be treated properly and still be able to attend college. Downtown Central None

Questions What are the different categories of floods? 10 Year, 100 Year, and 500 Year floods. 10 Year, 100 Year, and 500 Year floods. What is storm surge? A large dome of water often 50 to 100 miles wide that sweeps across the coastline near a hurricane landfall A large dome of water often 50 to 100 miles wide that sweeps across the coastline near a hurricane landfall Why is storm surge such a huge problem in the Gulf of Mexico? The Gulf of Mexico is where most hurricanes hit The Gulf of Mexico is where most hurricanes hit What makes storm surge so devastating? Storm surge acts as a giant bulldozer- hammering away everything in its path Storm surge acts as a giant bulldozer- hammering away everything in its path The images included on the map are examples of which kind of weathering? Mechanical Weathering Mechanical Weathering

Questions How much are Harris Countys faults moving each year? 0.2 to 0.8 inch per year 0.2 to 0.8 inch per year How would faults and weathering impact your university? Costly damage to facilities Costly damage to facilities Give 3 examples of layers to add about the crime level Age of the victim, Race of the offender, Time of the crime Age of the victim, Race of the offender, Time of the crime

Conclusion Crime data is the most important factor in the decision. Crime affects the students the most, and is the most likely to drive away potential students. Students would not feel safe traveling at night. A college in a dangerous area could result in loss of property or even life. With that being said, crime is the most important, as no other factor will affect a students life as severely. Crime data is the most important factor in the decision. On a positive note, a dangerous area will most likely have lower land prices, leaving more cash for the school budget. They are not crucially important. 6) Watersheds – used to store excess water, overflow will flood the nearby streets. They are not crucially important.
