1 Cell Division Cell Cycle and Mitosis

2 Objectives How is the cell cycle regulated?
How are cancer cells different from other cells?

3 Cell Cycle Process Not all cell move through the cell cycle once they have developed, ex: Muscle and Nerve Cells Others go through a cycle every few hours!

4 Controls on Cell Division
Can observe controlled cell growth in the lab by placing cells in a petri dish containing nutrients. Will grow until they form a thin layer across the bottom of the dish. Once in contact with other cells, cell growth will STOP!

5 WHAT happens if cell growth is not regulated?
Cell Cycle Regulators What “tells” the cell to divide and stop dividing? Figured out a special protein does this CYCLIN When added to a non-growing cell, the cell will produce spindle fibers and prepare to divide. WHAT happens if cell growth is not regulated?

6 Uncontrolled Cell Growth
Cancer is a disorder in which some of the body’s own cells lose the ability to control growth DO NOT RESPOND TO THE SIGNALS THAT REGULATE THE GROWTH OF MOST CELLS! Form masses called Tumors What are some causes of cancer? Smoking, tobacco Radiation exposure Viral infections
