Group One How would we increase the alignment of the SDG’s with The National Development Plan (NDP).

Objectives What is the government view on the SDG’s , given that we also have the NDP? Are there any commonalities or gaps when we compare the SDG’s to the NDP and what do we view as a priority in South Africa? How can we as a country fast-tracking implementation of the SDG’d in alignment with the NDP?

SDG 3 NDP 3.1 By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100 000 live births. Reduced maternal mortality from 500 t less than 100 per live births 3.2 By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1000 live births Reduce infant Mortality from 43 to below 20 per 1000 births

SDG 3 NDP 3.3 By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases Speaks to HIV and Prevention and cure of TB 3.4 By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being. Reduced prevalence of non communicable chronic diseases by 28 %

A framework for analysis: Social determinants of health
In South Africa, poverty and inequity are the major social determinants of health. Whereas adequate and equitable funding for health services is important, the solutions to address social determinants are more nuanced. Similarly, economic development alone will not improve health if resources are inequitably distributed.
