Missouri Compromise 1820 Missouri applied for admission as a slave state Maine requested statehood as free state Compromise 36 Parallel States north of it—free (slavery not allowed) States south of it—slavery was allowed Maintained a perfect balance of free state and slave states.

30 years later… Compromise of 1850
California added to the union as a free state Utah and New Mexico could decide if they would allow slavery (popular sovereignty- people choose/vote on slavery or no slavery in state) New law- to help slave owners recapture slaves called “Fugitive Slave Law”

North Gets South Gets California admitted as a free state
No slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico territories Slave trade prohibited in Washington D.C. Slaveholding permitted in Washington D.C. Texas loses boundary dispute with New Mexico Texas gets $10 million Fugitive Slave Law

Compromise of 1850 Benefitted: WESTERN states were happy they could vote on their own issues. Upset: SOUTH – there is no longer a balance of slave states and free states. Upset: NORTH – Because of the Fugitive Slave Act, they have to return freed slaves to the south.
