1 Agenda October 4 or 5 Journal The Story of the Land of Horner
HW: Read pages and complete the Key Terms Journal: In working with a group what are your strengths and what are your weaknesses? How did these strengths and weaknesses play out in this group project? How will you use and try to overcome them for the next project?

2 The Story of the Land of Horner
It is the year 2010 and you live in the land of Horner. It is mostly a peaceful land where everyone minds their own business. There is turmoil brewing however, what once was a small country has grown to include many regions. Each region wants and needs different things to survive and be content in the land of Horner. Some regions are poor and have simple demands; some regions are rich and powerful and have grand designs for power. To solve their problems, and meet the different regions’ demands, they have come together for the first time to make some decisions about their country.

Get into groups of three Each region has a list of demands I will need one person from the class to be the note taker on the board As a class decide how every regions’ demands can be met Each group should state their demands Then the class should decide how to make the decisions

4 How’d It Go? On a piece of paper (to turn in) answer the following questions: What went wrong? Isn’t this a democracy? Why didn’t it work? Why couldn’t the class solve the problems? How could we fix this?

5 Let’s Try Again Each group choose some one to represent their interests Choose a person who is willing to speak and is trustworthy Group of Representatives please come and get your orientation packet Read your packet and then join the other representatives at the representative table. Do not share your packet with others. As a group of Representatives please decide how each regions’ needs can be met.

6 ATTACK! Oh no! While the senators have been squabbling the Land of Horner has been attacked by Nelsonsilvania! The regions of Horner are unprepared and unprotected for such an invasion. They have no military or military leader to help save them from the devastation that ensues. All they have is a corrupt group of officials who have been too busy with all the affairs of the land to look to the protection of it.

7 How’d It Go? What went wrong? Was the Senate representing your interests? Why couldn’t the Senate defend you from the invasion? How do we fix it?

8 Final Structure As a class pick two people who you feel are strong leaders. These people will become your consuls. The consuls will be the military leaders and will choose people to become the Centuriate Assembly (Army) The consuls will decide whether or not to send the military to war. Senators you are now in charge of foreign and domestic affairs You make recommendations for sending the army to invade Mostly you solve the problems of the Land of Horner Rest of the class will form the Tribunal Assembly Your job is to make laws for the land

9 List of duties Consuls Decide whether or not to invade Ms. Nasby’s room Decide whether or not to invade all the surrounding class rooms Decide what to do about Nelsonsilvania Centuriate Assembly makes laws concerning military invasions and war Senate Decide Group 2’s demands of comfortable armchairs and heating and air-conditioning Decide Group 4’s demands of donuts and 5 dollars Decide Group 5’s demands of people doing their homework and Starbucks Decide Group 9’s demands of not paying 5 dollars and getting Starbucks Tribal Assembly Decide Group 1’s demands of 10min in class breaks and eating in the class room Decide Group 3’s demands of no homework Decide Group 7’s demands of using their cell phones and 10:am start and 1:00pm end Decide Group 8’s demands of no cell phones and 8:00 start and 2:-00pm end Decide Group 10’s demands of closed student store and outside of class breaks.

10 Exit Ticket Each group should turn in the list of their decisions
The Region who gets most of their demands met gets a prize. So be sure to represent your regions interests honestly. Compromise is always an option
