1 MLA and Summer reading project formatting

2 Formatting Please remember the following things when formatting your paper: -You need to use Times New Roman font (it is not the default font) -Your font size should be 12 point (sometimes default is 11, so be careful.) -Your paper should be double spaced. -You should have 1 inch margins (which should be the default).

3 More formatting -The titles of all novels are EITHER underlined or italicized, but never both! -When you refer to an author, you either refer to them by their first and last name or simply their LAST name.

4 MLA formatting within your paper
When using MLA, you need to make sure you do it right. When doing a quote by itself: “The real reason for the quest is always self-knowledge.” When doing a quote with a parenthetical citation: “The real reason for the quest is always self-knowledge” (Foster 3). When doing a quote with a author lead-in and parenthetical citation: Foster states that “[t]he reason for the quest is always self-knowledge” (3).

5 Mla formatting within your paper
When you want to use a quote in the middle of the quote: Foster states that it is mainly teenagers are “likely to have a long way to go in the self- knowledge department” (3). When you need to omit (take out) words in a quotes: “Forty-five-year-old men either have self-knowledge…while your average sixteen-to- seventeen-year-old kid is likely to have a long way to go in the self-knowledge department” (Foster 3).

6 Mla formatting within your paper
When your quote is longer than four lines in the referenced text (block quote): In face, the quest is very important because of this: The quest consists of five things: (a) a quester, (b) a place to go, (c) a stated reason to go there, (d) challenges and trials en route, and (e) a real reason to go there. Item (a) is easy; a quester is just a person who goes on a quest, whether or not he know it’s a quest. In fact, usually he doesn’t know. (Foster 3)

7 Works cited When doing a Works Cited, make sure to do the following: -Sources must be in alpha order. -If the source goes on to a second line, the second line will be indented. -For formatting, look it up on the internet. There are so many rules. Use the Purdue Owl website (it’s the best one).
