Chapter 1 Science is everywhere!
2
Science comes from the Latin term “scire” which means “to know” or “having knowledge”
* Human beings are curios by nature. * We need to know stuff.
3
People have been trying to escape from science but they can not!
* Science is everywhere! * Everything you do and the things you use has a tie into science.
4
Before a movie makes it to the screen, every scene must be captured on film.
* to accomplish this the movie makers must understand the science of optics.
5
* mechanics * hydraulics *electronics * acoustics
When you see an explosion; life-like robotic dinosaur; or hear some heart-stopping sound effect you are back in the world of science. * chemical reactions * mechanics * hydraulics *electronics * acoustics
6
The human eye receives images in the form of light waves, which are translated into nerve impulses.
The brain reverses the process to recognize the image.
7
The human eye can not process more than than 4 separate images per second.
* movie makers have to know this in filming and showing their movies. * too slow, movie looks choppy * too fast, it is hard to follow
8
Pure Science The gathering of new information or the discovery of a new relationship or fact. * adds to the body of scientific knowledge * does not have to be practical or useful
9
Applied Science Using the new discoveries to create useful things.
* movie camera * eyeglasses * contact lenses
10
Technology The practical use of scientific information.
* using the things that science creates
11
Science is a very broad and large subject.
* it can be divided into more specific areas of study.
12
Basic Areas of Science 1.) Life Science - studies living things
2.) Earth Science - studies Earth and Space 3.) Physical Science - studies matter and energy
13
SCIENCE Life Science Physical Science Earth Science
14
Physical Science topics can be grouped into 2 fields of study.
1.) Chemistry - study of matter 2.) Physics - study of energy
15
SCIENCE Life Science Physical Science Earth Science Ch. Ph.
16
Every measurable thing in the universe is either matter or energy.
MATTER ENERGY * plants * lightning * animals * thunder *clouds * motion * elements * sound
17
In physical science you will study:
1.) composition of matter - “what stuff is made of” 2.) how matter behaves 3.) how matter and energy are related.
