2 Charlemagne and the Franks
Frankish kings used military power to expand their territory. Example, Charles Martel stopping Muslim expansion into Europe at the Battle of Tours in France. The alliance between Frankish kings and the Catholic Church reestablished Roman culture and Christianity in Western Europe.

4 Emperor Charlemagne Roman culture was revived and reinterpreted under Charlemagne and Frankish rule. The Franks emerged as a major force in Western Europe. The Pope crowned Charlemagne the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 800 C.E. (A.D.). Church and politics united= The Catholic Church became a powerful force in European politics.

6 Age of Charlemagne Most of western Europe was included in the new empire. Churches, roads, and schools were built to unite the empire. Charlemagne’s empire included modern day France and Germany.
