1 Biodiversity! Sections

2 Biodiversity: The variety of species in an ecosystem.
Some place can have high diversity and while other have low diversity.

3 Abiotic Factors Affecting Biodiversity
-LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! Biodiversity increases are linked to climate high temperatures and high rainfall lead to increased biodiversity

4 3.4 Factors that affect biodiversity
Activity on page 90. Use Table 1 to make a bar graph or dot/scatterplot graph Remember all the graphing rules(i.e use axis labels and a title!) we went over in our lab duotang when we did the sheet on data analysis Answer questions a and b Realize the activity is showing that biodiversity can be impacted biotic factors as well! Complete pg. 91 Circle graphs as well.

5 Biodiversity HOTSPOTS
A biodiversity hotspot is a place that has a very high level and variety of species.

6 High diversity: Madagascar
-off the coast of Africa, a hotspot for diversity!

7 Low Diversity: The Tundra
Low levels of precipitation combined with very low temperatures leads to conditions that don’t promote high diversity!

9 Biodiversity in Ontario
The province of Ontario is very vast and the climate changes greatly across it. The Southern part of Ontario has the warmest temperatures and the greatest level of species diversity. Southern Ontario also has the greatest human population. This is a direct threat to the biodiversity found in this region.

10 Loss of Ecosystems The growth of cities has large impacts on ecosystems and the organisms found within them. Habitat becomes fragmented and species fall under stress or have to leave all together. ARTICLE: region-on-the-rise-but-that-should-be-no-surprise
