3
Revolution is traveling in a circular (round) path:
4
Rotation and Revolution is exactly what happens to planets:
Our earth rotates once every day
5
And revolves once Every year around the sun
6
The sun and all the planets rotate
AND, the planets all revolve around the sun!
7
It can be dizzying!
8
Why do you think It gets cold in the winter?
What season is it in australia during december? Why does it get cold in the winter? Don’t answer the question. See what they think and then say something like, “Well let’s find out.” What season is it in Australia during December? Again, don’t answer it for the class, but the answer is Summer.
9
Seasons are caused by the earth’s tilt
23° The earth’s rotation is tilted at 23°
10
So different parts of the earth don’t get as much sun as others
Sunlight Answer: the southern (or lower) hemisphere For more on how the earth is divided (hemispheres, equator, prime meridian, etc.) see Equator Which hemisphere gets more sun?
11
As the earth revolves around the sun, the tilt stays the same
12
Which hemisphere gets the most sunlight?
This means that the hemisphere that gets the most sunlight changes throughout the year Equal Southern Northern The answer to the question is in this order (will also appear on the slide, ask before you reveal the answer): southern, equal, northern, equal Equal
13
Do you think it’s hotter or colder when we have more sunlight?
What season is it when it’s hotter? When we have less sunlight, what season are we in? Answer 1: Hotter Answer 2: Summer Answer 3: Winter Answer 4: Fall or Spring What season do you think we’re in if both hemispheres are getting the same amount of sunlight?
14
What season is the northern hemisphere experiencing?
spring winter Summer Answers are provided on slide, (ask first!) in order: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall Fall
15
A common misconception is that the seasons are caused by the earth’s distance from the sun
Fall summer winter spring
16
But During our winter, We’re actually closer to the sun than during the summer!
So seasons are caused by the earth’s tilt and the distribution of sunlight, not the distance fROm the sun
17
