Making a Watershed!
2
What is a watershed? A watershed is a group of rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water where water flows from a high point into a low point.
3
Make your watershed! Carefully crumple your paper so it has a high point and a low point. Try squishing the sides in and then closing your hand around it
4
Color your watershed! Use blue for the bodies of water (rivers/lakes). Hint: Predict where water would collect or run if it were to rain on this watershed. Color brown and green for areas where there are natural places. Color grey, purple, or black for areas where there are cities or other human activities.
5
Let it rain! Gently spritz water over your watershed and see if your prediction was right! Did the blue areas on your watershed have water puddles? What happened to the grey, purple, or black areas? Where did they run to? If this was a real watershed and the grey, purple, or black areas were places where pollution was dumped, what would happen to the water quality in your watershed?
