Branding area: this is the area that has the Explorer name, tagline, representative photo, and portal goal statement, including targeted user group(s).
Feature Space: the Partnership for the Umpqua Rivers wanted the geographic map interface to be displayed in the feature space, but can also feature a story, including a multi-media story. What to include in the feature space?
Branding area: this is the area that has the Explorer name, tagline, representative photo, and portal goal statement, including targeted user group(s). Note: Oregon Explorer name has been trademarked, but the basin, topic, and data portal names have not been trademarked.
Context: this is the area that is intended to provide the user the larger context for accessible content. We also call it the “learn about” section, where a user can learn about a topic, place, natural resource issue, and the stories that should help them to better understand the context for a particular item of interest.
Tools: this is the area that provides the tools to access content in a variety of formats: maps, charts, data, photos, reports, contacts, and other additional resources (i.e. websites and news articles now).
Portal list: this area is being used to provide users with a complete listing of the available portals.
Search: The intent of the search is to enable a user to search a particular portal, all the Explorer portals, and anywhere that LibraryFind can harvest. Note: we have not been able to effectively search for a long time. Kevin is working on it now with the new Gray Chair (Terry Reese).
Home: Brings the user back to the home of the Explorer portal they are in.
Site acknowledgements: in this section we provide logos of each portal’s sponsors. For the Umpqua Basin Explorer, the partner/sponsor is the Partnership for the Umpqua Rivers (PUR). Note: We have recently developed a governance document with PUR to address long-term sustainability and roles. They are a very active partner.
Help section: Additional resources to help user (help section, glossary, FAQ)
Items below the “fold”:
Tout boxes: these are the 3 areas that are intended to be more dynamic. Each tout box is intended to tout a new Explorer feature or service. Generally we tout the most recent decision support tools. On the Umpqua Basin Explorer home page, we are currently touting the Water Quality visualization tool, Fish Passage Inventory tool and the Watershed Restoration tool (basin portal tool). Note: Since we developed 3 tools for this client/partner, we opted to use 3 tout boxes (instead of the 2 featured on the OE home page).
User Input: this is the area for users to provide feedback and to submit content to an Explorer site (e.g. documents to note: this is a design change from the OE home page.
Footer 1: Alternate way for users to get to context (learn about sections) and tools (e.g. mapping, archiving, etc.)
Footer 2: General information about site, disclaimers, contacts, comments.
