1 What is Geography Geography: Is the study of land, people, cultures, interactions and movement. Geography is NOT just the study of maps!

2 What is Geography Geography is broken down into two categories:
1. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY – The landscapes, surface, processes, and climate of the earth.

3 What is Geography 2. Human Geography - The branch of the social sciences that studies the world, its people, communities and cultures. Human geography focuses on studying human activities Human geography is particularly diverse.

4 5 Themes of Geography Location: Location can be absolute or relative.
Absolute location: provides a definite reference to locate a place, such as latitude and longitude, or a street address. Relative location: describes the location of a place relative to other places, such as HSPVA is in Montrose.

5 5 Themes of Geography Place: Place describes the human and physical characteristics of a location. Physical characteristics include a description such things as the mountains, rivers, beaches, topography, and animal and plant life of a place. Human characteristics include the human- designed cultural features of a place, such as land use and architecture.

6 5 Themes of Geography Region: A region is any unit of space that is unified by the presence of some characteristic. Regions can be formal, functional, or perceptual. Formal – official boundaries Functional – used for transportation, communication, or trade Perceptual/Vernacular – based on our perceptions

10 5 Themes of Geography Movement: This theme studies the trasnfer of ideas, fads, goods and resources across the planet.

12 5 Themes of Geography Human-Environment Interaction: Considers how humans adapt to and modify the environment. Humans shape the landscape through their interaction with the land; this has both positive and negative effects on the environment.
