Geography is NOT just the study of maps!

Absolute location: provides a definite reference to locate a place, such as latitude and longitude, or a street address.
Relative location: describes the location of a place relative to other places, such as HSPVA is in Montrose.

Place: Place describes the human and physical characteristics of a location.
Physical characteristics include a description such things as the mountains, rivers, beaches, topography, and animal and plant life of a place.
Human characteristics include the human- designed cultural features of a place, such as land use and architecture.

Region: A region is any unit of space that is unified by the presence of some characteristic. Regions can be formal, functional, or perceptual.
Formal – official boundaries
Functional – used for transportation, communication, or trade
Perceptual/Vernacular – based on our perceptions
