2 1970s ROCK Counterculture ended.
Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died in from drug overdoses. The Beatles broke up in 1970. Rock and roll split into many categories. Many bands went back and forth between the different categories. The 1970s was the end of the counterculture for rock. Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin both overdosed in Jim Morrison of the Doors died in The Beatles split in 1970 as well.

3 Roots Rock Bands who wanted to move away from the psychedelic music to a more basic, original form. Blended folk and country, creating Southern rock and country rock.

Amazing live performances and signature songs made them popular. Three members died in a plane crash in 1977 ending their success. Members came from the south. They tried to replace the members, but they never reached the level they had before. They named their band after their high school P.E. teacher, Leonard Skinner.

10 SOFT AND HARD ROCK There is a difference between ‘classic’ rock.
Split into two categories: soft and hard rock.

Sold over 250 million albums. Their albums were mostly ‘concept albums’. Pink Floyd was from Britain. Awesome albums. Their lyrics were philosophical and told stories. Their live shows were very elaborate with one tour having large pink inflatable pigs. As of 2013, they have sold over 250 million albums worldwide. Many of their albums were ‘concept albums’. A concept album is an album in which all musical or lyrical ideas contribute to a single theme or story. Concept albums of Pink Floyd include, ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ (73), ‘Wish You Were Here’ (75) and ‘The Wall’ (79).

Their songs have been featured in many movies. Freddie Mercury’s fight with AIDS brought attention to the disease that was not well known at that time. Their songs cross into many genres including a rock opera that has become one of the most well-known songs ever…Bohemian Rhapsody.

Regarded as the first New Wave group to have mainstream success. Won 6 Grammy Awards The Police were from England and were formed in Their most famous member was Sting, who later had a successful solo career after leaving The Police. They are generally regarded as the first New Wave group to achieve mainstream success. They won six Grammy Awards.

27 Aerosmith Aerosmith was an American Band Steven Tyler
Very energetic stage presence. Many multiple-platinum albums Aerosmith was an American Band. Most famous member was Steven Tyler. Tyler has a unique stage presence. Microphone normally covered with scarves. Tyler has a very energetic stage performance and dances with the microphone.

Changed name from The New Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin because of The Who. Estimated million records sold worldwide. Were known for having crazy tours, flamboyant clothing, and debauchery. Were originally named The New Yardbirds. Drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle of the Who on hearing the new group joked and said the band would ‘go down like a lead balloon.’ Upon hearing this, the band changed their name to Led Zeppelin. The Who was mistaken in the popularity the band would receive. They have an estimated sales of million records sold worldwide. Most famous song is ‘Stairway to Heaven’. First song to be played on the radio that was that long. Most songs on the radio were limited to 3 minutes. The song was 8 minutes long.

34 Black Sabbath From England Ozzy Osbourne Pioneers of heavy metal
Over 15 million records sold in US, 70 million worldwide Incorporated occult and horror-inspired lyrics with tuned down guitars. Black Sabbath was a group from England whose most famous member was Ozzy Osbourne. They were pioneers of heavy metal. They were one of the first bands to incorporate ‘darkness’ into their lyrics. Lyrics were horror-inspired and filled with references to the occult. Their guitars were tuned down creating a deeper sound that made a signature dark sound to their songs. Black Sabbath sold over 15 million records in the US and over 70 million worldwide. Ozzy was kicked out of the band but went on to have a successful solo career.
